4242 VEP responses to achromatic and chromatic stimuli in sharp and blurred vision

چکیده
The pattern VEP is frequently abnormal in multiple sclerosis. In this disease the VEP latency is prolonged and the amplitude is reduced. The use of the VEP amplitude in diagnosis is limited because of the large interand intrasubject variability and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Goal of this project is to improve the SNR of VEP’s with alternative averaging procedures, and to investigate whether VEP latency jitter and SNR are supplementary parameters in the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. I!,laka The latency variability of “single” VEP responses is estimated and corrected by means of a spectral phase difference (SPD) method. The achieved improvement is expressed by the SNR of the VEP ensemble. li!cuks In a comparitive study of a control group consisting of 29 healthy subjects and a group of 30 patients we found that in the original VEP data of the multiple sclerosis group the latency jitter was significantly (p<O.OS) higher, and the SNR significantly @<0.05) lower. Correction of latency jitter resulted in a small increase of the SNR in the control group, and a significant increase in the MS group. Conclusions The developed jitter correction method resulted in better VEP estimates in patients of the MS group, and provided the clinician with two additional VEP parameters: signal-to-noise ratio and latency jitter. Further research is necessary to investigate whether this can lead to an increased diagnostic power of visual evoked potentials.

Differential aging of chromatic and achromatic visual pathways: behavior and electrophysiology
Aging of visual pathways was measured psychophysically and physiologically in subjects aged 20-89 years. Contrast thresholds for the chromatic pathways increased with age, but there were no significant changes for thresholds of the achromatic pathway at low spatial frequencies. For visual evoked potential (VEP) responses, again only the chromatic pathways were significantly affected by age. Age...
متن کاملDevelopment of the spatio-chromatic visual evoked potential (VEP): a longitudinal study
Most prior visual evoked potential (VEP) research on the development of color vision has employed pattern-reversing stimuli that are not optimal for producing chromatic responses. We measured infant VEPs using low spatial frequency, onset-offset stimuli, modulated along the three axes of a cone-based color space (Derrington et al. [J. Physiol 1984;357, 241-265.]). Three color-normal infants wer...
متن کاملThe development of chromatic and achromatic contrast sensitivity in infancy as tested with the sweep VEP
Swept-contrast visual evoked potential (VEP) techniques were used to measure the development of contrast sensitivity functions (CSFs) for achromatic and red/green isoluminant chromatic gratings. Subjects were infants of 8, 14, 20 and 32 weeks of age, and adults. Stimuli were 20 deg, 0.3-4 cyc/deg sinusoidal gratings, counterphased at 6 Hz and modulated through white. Achromatic and chromatic CS...
متن کاملTemporal analysis of the chromatic flash VEP—separate colour and luminance contrast components
Temporal analysis of the chromatic flash visual evoked potential (VEP) was studied in human subjects with normal and anomalous colour vision using a deterministic pseudo-random binary stimulus (VERIS). Five experiments were carried out on four normal subjects investigating heterochromatic red-green exchange and single colour/achromatic (either red/grey or green/grey) exchange over a wide range ...
متن کامل‘Gamma’ band oscillatory response to chromatic stimuli in volunteers and patients with idiopathic Parkinson’s disease
The signal structure of the responses to equiluminant chromatic and achromatic (contrast) stimuli was studied in normal volunteers and patients with mild to moderate idiopathic Parkinson's disease. Visual stimuli were full-field (14 x 16 deg) achromatic or equiluminant (red-green or blue-yellow) sinusoidal gratings at 2c/deg and 90% contrast presented in onset-offset mode. The signal was proces...
